Last night for Family Home Evening we talked about some counsel given over the weekend at Stake Conference (a big, semi-annual local church meeting) by a visiting General Authority (Elder Sitati), which was about the importance of daily prayer. He said that morning prayer should be part of our routine, and gave the analogy, "You wouldn't leave the house without putting on your shoes or combing your hair, would you? Then why would you leave the house without first praying?"
I had recently heard from a friend the rhyming reminder, "Prayer before hair." Since Noah doesn't do a thing to his hair in the morning we decided that saying didn't apply across the board for our family, so Aaron came up with "Prayers before stairs." I made this nifty sign which, as you can see, is hanging at the top of the stairs (suspended from the ceiling) at about eye level for Zoe and Lucy... everyone will notice it when they start to go down the stairs and the idea is that everyone will be reminded to say their morning prayers before heading down for breakfast, etc.
So far, so good... it worked for all of us this morning! We won't leave it there forever but my hope is to get everyone around here in the habit of daily prayers.

I read that prayer analogy on Kristina's blog. I think it's brilliant! The hair saying wouldn't work in our house either, neither would the stairs one. Hmmmm....
What a great idea! You'd think with 5 girls the hair thing would work in our house, but I'm pretty sure the stairs would work better.
Great idea, now we only need to get some stairs!
great idea!
I like it! We don't have stairs so I will have to come up with an alternate version :)
No stairs here. Not much hair either. Chairs? Bears? Stares? Dares? Wii?
I totally need help.
Laurie you crack me up!
On the way to school yesterday I was discussing with the kids (for the millionth time) how silly I think it is that with all the shoes around here and especially with the girls being able to share shoes much of the time, there is always such a frantic scramble to find shoes on the way out the door. So we decided to come up with a rhyme for that too... it's "Feet before eat," as in, they're now supposed to put their shoes on before they have breakfast. I'm not sure if it'll catch on but it's fun to come up with silly rhymnes :)
If only Chores rhymed with Wii...
Love it!! I COULD do prayer before hair around here...since we have no stairs. And lots of hair.
Is it bad that I share your young daughters' problems in finding two matching shoes in the morning? I usually have to start praying just to find the other shoe. "Feet before eat" will be my new motto.
That is such an awesome idea. I have another prayer saying that sometimes gets me out of bed to say them "On your knees or on your feet, never ever on your seat!" I liked that!
I saw this in real life -- looking up your stairs today -- and it looks great! I think it's a great idea!
I really like this idea Sara. I think I'll file it away for one of those last minute FHE's.
