That beautiful foggy mist is the steam escaping from my canner during my very last batch of applesauce. Oh that is a welcome sight. That means I am officially DONE with canning for 2009. Between the usual spring strawberries, the summer
raspberries and blackberries, the late summer
pears and
peaches, and the fall apples, I have had my fill of canning for the year
(although my mom did about twice as much as me this year; wow!) and I can't say that I'll miss it.
Until strawberry season, that is, when I will be back to making a year's worth of jam like crazy. But I'll be ready for it by then.
What's the deal with that one garish white ring on that quart of applesauce? Good heavens, I'm going to have to go replace it with a brass one. Honestly.

You rock! Where do you find all your fruit so cheap?
From Utah; there are a few people around town here who bring Utah fruit down by the truckload. It's cheaper than the store but not TOO cheap. The applesauce ends up being almost $3/quart but it just tastes so much better than store bought, plus I don't put any sugar or anything in it so I feel like it's super healthy. The raspberries & blackberries weren't cheap but the jam does turn out to be cheaper than store bought. Strawberries are the best deal; I make enough strawberry freezer jam to last all year (we are total jam snobs around here; no store bought jam for us!) and it's really cost effective when strawberries go on sale, just at the grocery store or Costco.
You are way too ambitious for me. Besides, my kids don't even like jam. Well maybe Jake, but why work so hard just for one?
I'm proud of you though.
Sara...You are so awesome! I want to be just like you...next year...when I can't use moving as an excuse anymore :) I guess I really shouldn't even use it as an excuse now. We have been here 4 months!
I always love looking at your pictures of your nicely canned fruit :)
We are jam snobs too. I didn't do a lot this year though. I hope we don't run out! Oh, well, Steve loves store bought grape jelly. Gross. He can eat it. We will eat the rest.
