Space Derby

Tuesday night we had a new experience for cub scouts; the Space Derby! I had no idea what to expect... but I wasn't the only one. Most of us parents had never done this before, much less the boys, so we were all on a level playing field (which was nice ~ although some of the dads still got a little competitive).
The "space ships" race horizontally along thick fishing line (see the four parallel lines in the picture above... those are the four tracks), powered by a tightly-wound rubber band hooked to a plastic propeller. Do you recognize Noah's ship, below? It's "Bullet Bill" of Mario fame. I thought that was a pretty clever idea. Here he is at the start of one of his races.
Some of the ships went very fast at the start and then petered off, some started moderately and then had a burst of speed at the end, and some only made it halfway across the "track." It appeared that everyone's ship was about the same so I don't know why there was such disparity.

But what do you know, Noah's ship tied for first place! It was a fun night. And yes, the boy does not know how to smile normally for the camera. We're working on that.

My brother did one of these space derbys as a kid.

I can't believe we'll be entering into the fun world of cub scouts in just six months!

Congrats to Noah!

That does look pretty fun. Way to go, Noah!

(Yeah, I don't think that bottom picture even really looks like him with that huge grin!)
