Weekend in Review

The ward campout was awesome. I had serious doubts about camping in the desert, amidst prickly pears and palo verdes... but we were right by Roosevelt Lake and that made it so much fun. Also, being away from the city as it was, it got plenty cold at night... as in, the kids were in warm pj's and zipped up in sleeping bags, and our non-insulated "summer tent" was perfect. Everyone slept well, at least once the loud people who set up their tent about 20 ft from ours stopped singing campfire songs at 11pm. My kids thought that "I love the mountains, I love the rolling hills" was the funniest song they'd ever heard.
(Did I ever tell you that Kate & I once won a talent show and that song was part of our act? Or maybe all of our act; the details are hazy. It was 1989 and it was on a cruise ship in northern Europe. We had ship's band backing us up. We had two British girls singing with us. We sang it in a round. And our prize was a bottle of champagne. But I digress...)

The ward provided a mighty tasty breakfast the next morning and once the weather started getting too warm to sit around in the sun, we all trekked down to the lake. Most people had brought swimsuits. The bishop brought 6 canoes. A couple families had ski boats. The whole group of us took over the launch ramp (it wasn't a busy morning for boat launches) and pretended it was the beach (complete with chairs, snacks, & a beach umbrella) until a ranger came & broke up the party a couple hours later. Good times.

Noah must be thinking about that good smell again.

After taking the scenic route home (the Apache Trail -- very scenic but not advisable for the carsick prone!) which took us about 30-40 minutes longer than the quick way home, we had to hurry & get bathed & get the girls dolled up for a Princess birthday party they were invited to on Saturday afternoon. Aaron & Noah went to Freestone rec center to climb the rock wall while the girls were gone, and I went to the general RS broadcast. A busy day and a really fun weekend.

Lucy went as Gangsta Princess. Zoe's joining in with some gang signs too. And Zoe's sporting her Camping Rite of Passage badge there on her arm -- burned it on a lantern; ouch!

My camera's still missing -- Aaron took these pics with his camera. I guess I should figure out how to use his but it's got all these confusing settings and dials and buttons on it...

Love the pictures and love the post. I especially love the little story about our fabulous talent show experience. We were awesome. But I'm thinking we may have won the champagne for the costume contest... Remember those sweet Native American costumes?

Also, how funny that my old ward and new ward had their campouts at the same time AND in the same campground. Crazy! Wish we could have been there!

Sounds like a fun camping experience. I think I have been to the campground you went to. I am all about if you go camping in AZ it has to have pine trees. It isn't campiing without the pinetrees and pinecones.
