I have a friend named Buffie (for reals). We were in the same ward for several years. She is a 31-year-old mother of four, an accomplished pianist, teaches piano to 42 students, and she's the one I got my teaching curriculum from (which I love!) -- and when she recently emailed me with a request, I was happy to help.
Hi Sara, I have had a job fall into my lap and the bottom line is that I need to become proficient on the organ by June 18th. Could you meet me at your chapel and go over a few things on the organ with me? Thanks, Buffie
We met together last night and I answered, the best I could, her questions about swell and great, pedals, sustaining, pipe length, registration, etc. She came prepared with the music for her "job" and had even bought herself a pair of organ shoes.
I assumed she had a local gig of playing at a Methodist church for a few a Sundays, or something.
But as it turns out, she is leaving June 18th for a 12-day tour through Germany and Austria, accompanying a professional choir - and getting paid for it!
Their accompanist fell through last-minute, and apparently it's very expensive to get a last-minute professional fill-in. Buffie's husband's job has something to do with the tour arrangements, so he volunteered her (and he'll be there in Europe with her too!). She did have to submit a resume, which apparently was good enough! She has to accompany 7 pieces on the piano, and 3 on the organ. Man oh man, I was sitting there last night looking over her shoulder at the music thinking, "I could totally play that!!" and for an all-expense paid trip to Europe? Sign me up!
That Buffie is one lucky girl.
P.S. Happy Birthday to my sister Jamie!! I hope you have a great day!

Wow! That's exciting for Buffie! It's crazy that she has that many piano students! Who has time for 42? You seem busy with 15. And thanks for the birthday shout out!
So did you forget to tell me that YOU had a blog as well??? I found your link on Laurie's! I just moved into Buffie's ward. It is so fun to have a friend already. And she was playing the organ last Sunday. Nice that I find out her info from your blog! Kristin Despain is in our ward too, so I feel confident I will never have to accompany anything!
Aww, a trip to Europe and playing would be so easy for you! Good for Buffie, and I agree with Jamie, who has time for 42 piano students?
And Happy Birthday to Jamie--I would go wish her one on her blog, if she only had one. :)
so now you just need to get on that list of fill-in organists!
I hear you, everything else good seems to fall on everyone else. How about breaking a couple of her fingers, and you can fill her spot :)
Wow!!! Go Buffie! And weirdnesses of weirdnesses, my sister has a friend named Buffie too! I miss her. Can my girls take Piano from you? We don't have a piano or anything...
