Summer plans

When a friend of mine announced that her 9-year-old son successfully made a batch of peanut butter cookies from scratch, I realized that I need to start teaching my kids how to cook! So, while I don't have all the details worked out yet, this summer I am going to hold some cooking/baking workshops for my kids. They will learn how to follow a recipe, measure ingredients, use proper equipment (what size mixing bowl, pots, utensils, etc), and make edible food! When I was about 10 or 12 I took a summer cooking class with several other kids which was taught by two teenaged sisters from our ward. I still remember it... we'd wear our swimsuits and prepare our food, and while things were cooking in the oven we'd pass the time by swimming in their pool, and then we'd come inside and eat what we'd made! It was so much fun.

Also, every Sunday my girls love to follow along in the hymnbook and sing with us at church... especially the 6-yr-olds who love using their new reading skills. But, none of my kids really know how to read the notes to sing. Noah and Molly have definitely had enough piano now to do so; Zoe and Lucy started taking piano in January and they're doing very well at learning the notes to play... so they can also learn how to translate those skills to singing. So, I'm going to teach them how to figure out what notes to sing when reading the music; a little singing workshop.

Since we have a trip to Disneyland planned for this spring and a little trip to Lake Powell in May, we don't have much planned at this point for the summertime; I think adding these little "classes" will be fun. Basically I'm just recording these ideas so I'll remember to do them... and, to pass these ideas on to you if it sounds like something you'd like to do with your kids.

Many of you have heard that my sister Jamie is starting toddlers' music classes this month. Only about 36 hours after making her formal announcement, her 2-3 year old class and 4-5 year old class are both full! She'll be teaching in 6-week sessions. If you'd like more info let me know!

I know when I did my "Letter of the Day" last summer it helped give some structure to our summer and helped me focus my time on activities and outings for the kids instead of just MY wants/needs.

I'd like more info on Jamie's music classes. And if you know of anyone who teaches 3 yr old dance classes I'd like that info too!

Thanks for mentioning me in your post! Thanks to you, the classes are filling up. You can let your peeps know that I am going to have another class on Tuesdays at 12:30... there are still spots open then. Also, there is plenty of room for people this summer!

Forgot to get signed up. Dang. I will have to get on her list for the next session, maybe when the next school year starts.

For little workshop classes for the kids, I traded once over fall break with a friend. i did "sewing "camp" and she did "scrapbook camp." It was a lot of fun!

Swimsuits and cooking...sounds sanitary! I think that's a great idea to teach your kids to cook, they already do everything else...why stop there!?
