Summer of Star Wars

This summer the kids have been a little obsessed with Star Wars. They've watched all the movies multiple times (except Revenge of the Sith, since it's rated PG-13, but Noah is just SO anxious for the day he's allowed to watch that one too) and much to Noah's delight, his sisters have been just as into it as he has. No dollies for us this summer, no sir, it's all about THE FORCE.

Last month, Noah's new (used) Millennium Falcon, Tie-Fighter, and X-Wing finally arrived, 9 days after his birthday. I found them on Ebay and I knew he'd love them. I also knew they wouldn't be here in time for his actual birthday but I thought surely they'd be here in time for his party, four days later. Nope. In fact, they arrived SEVENTEEN days after the Ebay auctions ended. Let this be a warning to you: NEVER USE PARCEL POST. Luckily he did get plenty of other great presents on his actual birthday and at his party, so when the Ebay stuff came it was like another celebration all over.

The Summer of Star Wars has led to interesting get-ups like this:

And figuring out how to play the Star Wars themes on the piano (the good-guys theme and the Darth Vader theme). And making up silly songs about Yoda. And having endless light-saber fights. And playing Star Wars video games. And conversations like the following:

Zoe: Squirrel, squirrel, squirrel. A squirrel is a real animal, right Mom?
Me: Right.
Zoe: Not like an Ewok. They're not real.
Me: Right.

Even when they take a break from the movies for a week or so, they still "play Star Wars" all the time; the only problem being that I have 3 daughters and there aren't too many female characters for them to play so they all fight over who gets to be Leia and who gets to be Queen Amidala. I wonder if this phase will die out once school starts and they have other things to do? Not likely, considering this news.

And finally, for all you Star Wars nerds out there, this video is hilarious. There's minor language so you might want to preview before showing your kids.

This is so funny to me. My kids have never seen any Star Wars and really have no interest. Although today Sam had this pole and called it his "Life Saber."
Come to think of it, I haven't seen any Star Wars since I was a kid (which means I still haven't seen any of the newer ones).
Some of us just aren't into that sort of thing. :)

Thank you for the comment AND for telling me how you found my blog!. (I'm always so curious how people find me but just assume most visitors come by way of Mrs. Dub.)

Also, my boys have totally gotten into Star Wars thanks to the friends we're staying with! Looks like Light Sabers will be on the list for Christmas!

mine were all just telling me what star wars halloween costumes they want me to make. jack is very specific about his and charlie is going to be some made up jedi knight (named nobi kenobi or something). in keeping with my 1-year-old-costume-has-to-go-with-the-name-theme i think luke will be luke skywalker. sam's the only one who wants to be a regular old knight.

I have another nephew, who is 5 1/2,that is IN LOVE with anything Star Wars. He's seen all 6 movies at least 5 times each and knows just as much as Jake knows about them all. He is so excited for Clone Wars to come to the movies. I sometimes have to ask Jake questions about the movies so I know what my nephew is talking about.
I like Zoe's comments about the Ewoks.

I am so out of the Star Wars loop myself. I guess that goes along with having all girls. I have seen the new movies, but just once when they were first out...so I don't know much about them. They aren't too scary for your kids? It just seems like there is tons of fighting in all of them. I am totally not like the kids can't see fighting, but they are not too bloody and violent? I don't remember.

I'm glad that your kids have had so much fun with it. Mine have seemed to really get into annoying each other and bugging me this summer. Our would have to be the Summer of Yelling probably.

I love that your girls think it's awesome. I sometimes think I'm the only girl that knows a lot about Star Wars. Being in my family with all older brothers, I don't think I really had a choice. When Nate and I were dating, I actually beat him at Star Wars Trivial Pursuit!

That is so funny! We have had a summer of star wars too - and my girls are so anxious to watch Revenge of the Sith - they think they will get to watch it when they are 9 because that is when their cousin got to watch it. Hmmmm....we will see about that! My kids think their daddy went on his mission to Star Wars - when he says he served in "the Dominican Republic" they only hear "Republic". It is too funny.
