Happy Love Day

We were faced with two dilemmas this year regarding the kids' classroom valentines: Noah's teacher sent home a note saying no candy allowed (but he really wanted to give something other than just a card), and Molly desperately wanted to make her own... she started folding pieces typing paper in half but I stopped her because I wanted her to be able to have something that looked a little nicer than typing paper but couldn't think of any ideas that were quick and not too complicated.

On Wednesday morning I saw two GREAT ideas on DesignMom that she did with her kids, both of which would work out perfectly in solving our two dilemmas!

One of DesignMom's daughters made bookmarks for her classmates. This was just right for Molly since she's very into reading lately and is always making bookmarks for herself anyway. Once I remembered that I had half a package of these pre-cut red cardstock bookmarks leftover from making Christmas tags, it was a done deal! I just bought some stickers and glitter glue and I already had enough ribbon around the house. She wrote the to/from on the back with a silver paint pen, and after the glitter glue had a chance to dry overnight she taped a pack of mini m'm's to each one.

As I said, Noah wanted to give his classmates something fun and not JUST a card. Having looked at the store at the regular valentines and seeing that most of the "fun stuff" were fake tattoos, I thought it would be nice to try something different too. So here's another idea from DesignMom; this one her son did. We bought a book of Mad Libs from Barnes & Noble (after having no luck finding any at Target, Fry's, or Walgreens!) and I cut the pages out with an exacto knife (next time I would use a rotary cutter). Since it was a big book there were plenty for each kid to get 3. So we rolled up 3 Mad Libs pages together tightly, then rolled a small piece of Valentine's tissue paper around each one, wrapped several times with red yarn, put a tag on and tied in a bow. DesignMom used origami paper and embroidery floss in lots of bright colors; this is what I had... but I think they turned out great! Also, DesignMom was kind enough to include a .pdf page of the 3 coordinating messages, "i'm mad about you," "i can't lib without you," and "you have mad skillz," which saved me all kinds of time formatting & etc. Thanks DesignMom!!! I printed them on red cardstock... so yes we have clashing shades of red but Noah likes them and I'm glad he was on board with this idea! He wrote the to/from on the back of the little tags.

Isn't the internet/blogging great for finding ideas?

(Zoe and Lucy are giving regular store-bought valentines with a treat taped on. I don't have the energy to do something creative with all four of them!)

As for me, my big plan is to give Hubs the same thing I gave him last year... he's planning to be gone all day Saturday snowboarding since it snowed A LOT in the mountains over the past week, so I will have time to get this done. And it really needs to get done.

What are your weekend/V-Day plans?

{Happy birthday to my nephew Tyson yesterday and Happy anniversary to Jamie &Eric today!}

Love the creative ideas! But what's up with the "no candy" teacher? What a party pooper!

P.S. - I still don't see your header!

My other friend was having issues with her blog too - not sure if they're the same ones or not, but she wrote this post about it. Maybe it will help? I learned a few things myself:

Hmmmm....as reader of Design Mom as well, we too made bookmarks. And, since Caroline wants to do everything just like Lindsay, Z and L were the lucky recipients of Caroline's version. Nice, no? And my cardstock base for the bookmarks (all but a few pink ones) came from the leftover cardstock stack from Christmas cards in 2005. It was really fun. She signed the backs and we glued a Dove chocolate heart to the back. Candy still allowed! :)

Tyson says "thanks for the shout out."
I say you are quite creative for making those outstanding valentines.

Those are cool valentines. Store it in my mental file. Or give me a reminder earlier next year so I can use it.

I don't have a valentine's gift for Dan planned. I should clean my room, and my entire house, but I can't seem to find any time. Aargh! I'm really tired of having sick kids and extra appointments.

Great ideas! I just wish that I have found some yesterday!! But I will definitely file away those ideas for next year.
