Happy Life's Tips for Happiness, #3

Tip #3: Get something done today.

Have you ever noticed a difference between your self-esteem at the end of a productive day, and your self-esteem at the end of a lazy day? I have! While we all have days when we legitimately need a break and a rest, I'm talking about those days when we have no good reason not to accomplish at least a couple items on our list... those days when we waste the whole morning, vowing to do something in the afternoon, but then the afternoon is spent shopping online or blogging or something and suddenly Hubs is home and it's time to make dinner and you never got around to sweeping the kitchen floor or unloading the dishwasher?

Well, some of you may have no idea what I'm talking about, but may I confess that I have had those days before... and instead of feeling "rested" at the end of the day, I feel bad about myself, and guilty. You know, like the kind of guilt that makes you want to eat a whole 9x13 of brownies or something...

You don't have to get everything done on your list, every day. But just accomplishing a few things will help keep your spirits, and your opinion of yourself, up!

These "tips" are in no particular order; I'm just posting them as I think of them. Also, some may be more applicable to short-term happiness and some for long-term, but long-term happiness probably starts with each day, right?

I totally agree! Great tip! Sometimes I rush around and start doing things the last few minutes before Eric gets home so that it seems like I have been productive. And I often turn off my computer for the entire evening so that he doesn't think it's been on all day while I have checked email and blogs. But I think he gets suspicious when every sentence I utter starts with, "I read on this girl's blog today that..." :)

I gotta go do something on my list!

Thanks for this tip--especially on a day when I have spent the morning reading and not doing anything.

Maybe I'll go start the dishwasher, then finish the book. :)

Thank you, Sara! You've given me the little push I need to fold this basket of laundry sitting next to me... ;)

This totally doesn't apply to me. I am productive all day long, I even find time to work out on my ballet barre in my dance room every day.

AMEN! I had a lazy day two days ago and felt like SUCH a hag! I just felt stinky and gross and like a total loser (ps...I didn't take a shower or put on my make-up and hung out in my pj pants all day).
Needless to say, I don't recommend it at all. "Getting ready" (whatever that may mean...some girls just put their hair in a pony tail and brush their teeth and they're good to go...others spend an hour and a half on make-up and their hair)...whatever...just get ready...even if you are just going to hang out at home.
Thanks for the great reminder/tip!

This is so true. I also like to break down the things on my list so I feel like I accomplished more because I get to cross more things off. So instead of listing "clean the bathroom," I list "wipe down the bathroom counters, clean the bathroom mirror, scrub the toilet, wash out the bathtub." Then I get to cross off 4 things on my list instead of just one, and if I don't get the whole bathroom done, I still got to feel like I accomplished something because I got to cross whatever I did get done off my list. Ah, the little mind games we play... :)

I totally do that too, Melanie. And I very much agree with this post. And I am still laughing (pretty hard) about Emi's comment. So funny.

Ditto to Kate's comment - Emi is hilarious - and I also am very detailed specifically with cleaning lists! "Clean bathroom" is just not enough to cross off for all that work!

I put this to work, cleaned the whole house today, feel more tired than happy though.

Kristin - I bet you'll be happy waking up to a clean house in the morning :)
