What's the first thing that would come to your mind if you looked at the nearest digital clock and it said 6:36?
(While you're thinking about that you can admire Noah's new haircut.)
Well if you were Noah, you'd say, Woah, look Mom! 6:36! Like, six is the square root of thirty-six! Check it out!
He does this all the time with digital clocks lately. Points out times like 5:41, because 5-4=1; etc. Secretly, I have also been doing this with clocks for as long as I can remember. It's especially fun when it's a VCR or something with a clock and a channel number displayed -- makes for many more equation possibilities. The goal (in my head) is to use ALL the numbers displayed in your equation. So if the time is 10:14 and the cable box says channel 2... well (1+4)(2)=10. Easy peasy.
Is this normal or is it limited to my son and me? I've always assumed I was unique in this respect -- but I may be wrong... when I was 4 or 5 I discovered that I could look straight at a light bulb, then look away and "see" the strange images you see after you've looked right at a light, and I assumed that meant I was magic. Later I figured out that everyone's eyes do the same thing, so I wasn't magic, and it was a bit devastating.
But if you tell me that everyone does that thing with the clocks, I can handle it.
Regardless, I know Noah got the math thing from me. That and the green eyes.

I do that sometimes. I can remember phone numbers like crazy and a lot of birthdays--usually because I come up with some trick. Like my childhood phone number 6618: the third 6 = 3 X 6. And I used to get so excited when I saw a digital clock reading 10:01 because it was the same backwards.
You and Noah are probably higher functioning math geeks than me. :) I'm still not up on square roots. Yeah, I'm thinking you both are magic.
You are math psychos! I am so jealous! I am a math loser. haha. I am in awe of you and your math genius for a son!
Ummm, I was president of Calculus Club... so I think I'm pretty much a math nerd squared. Or maybe I was just the most popular girl in Calculus. Ha ha! I don't make up equations with clocks nearly as much as I used to, but I still always do it with addresses and phone numbers. You definitely win the prize for being the mathiest in the family.
And may I say HOORAY for Noah's hair cut?!? Hooray! Looks great!!! I was a little nervous when AP told me that he wasn't going to cut it because Noah wanted to grow it out.
Are you all crazy? That's not normal! I NEVER think of math problems when I see a clock. I think about what TIME it is, but that's it. I thought for sure that the all the comments would talk about how unique you and Noah were, and then Laurie and Kate said they did similar things! What?! Maybe I am the odd one who just thinks that numbers are numbers.
Kate, you were the president of the Calculus Club? I totally didn't know that. How nerdy! I mean, smart!
Probably a good skill builder for Noah but totally NOT normal. Apparently Jaime and I are the only "normals" who read your blog!
I have to say that is definitely UNIQUE! I can remember phone numbers and birthdays, but making up math equations!?! When I look at the clock all I can see is how late I am running, or (on a rare occasion) how early I am.
I am going to have to say you are alone on this one. I do find it very interesting that somethng like that can be passed on. Loved this POST!!!
I do the same thing with digital clocks, addresses, phone numbers, and dates, but not to the extent of square roots. I never excelled at math or cared for it though.
Though I claim to be "a math person" I don't believe I have ever made equations from any numbers (unless it was homework.)
But we (you and I) do share one thing: Jack thinks like me too. He excels in the same things, and doesn't like the same subjects I didn't like (meaning he loves math, but hates writing.)
I am honored to have given birth to such a math whiz who gave birth to such a math whiz! That should make me part of the math club, right? Where else could that gene have come from? You do both have my green eyes too. What a proud parent/grandparent!
