Conference Tent

Last week during FHE we read this article, which talks about the time in the Book of Mormon when King Benjamin's people all gathered to hear him speak. Families set up their tents with the doors facing the tower from which King Benjamin spoke. The article talks about some kids setting up a "tent" made from a table & blankets, from which they watched General Conference. We decided to take it a step further and use an actual tent... so far so good! Our 3-man tent just fits in the loft, and they each have a General Conference Activity Packet* to work on, as well as pillows, blankets, chairs, and even some snacks. No, they are not staying in the tent the entire time, but it has been a fun thing, and they are able to watch Conference in the loft while we grown-ups watch it downstairs, in relative peace.

*If any of you don't have a General Conference Activity Packet, email me and I'll be happy to send the .pdf file to you!

Very cool idea! I wish I had a separate room for the kids to watch it in. Kind of destroys the spirit to be yelling at them to be quiet all the time. :)

What a fun idea! I'm gonna file this one away in my brain for in a few years when they might actually stay inside the tent and watch. Another great idea is go to grandma's house and let HER entertain the kids while you sit and watch in relative peace. That's what we're doing this time(we made it to CA this morning)...

We read the same Friend article...but we don't have room for a tent in front of our TV. Well, we do...but the adults would have missed watching! Good idea!

I actually ended up putting on Disney movies for my youngest kids upstairs. I know, I know. Not very spiritual of me. But either NO ONE is getting anything out of conference, or at least the adults could with the kids upstairs.

We did the "take the kids to Grandma's" thing! I wish they were old enough to do something cool like that. What a fun idea! Oh, and I LOVE thier little 7am band. Those kids are so clever!

Just to confess to you all, the wonderful tent idea really only worked for about 30-45 minutes of each session... the rest of the time it was chaos as usual!

The real magic came when we were at our wits' end, towards the end of the last session: I had each kid pick out a stack of books to read in their rooms, doors closed, while we enjoyed the last couple of talks in complete peace and quiet!

my kids actually sat in front of the TV for about 1 hour and 45 minutes coloring conference packets that our primary gave them the week before. i was amazed. combine that with the tent and you might get them for the whole 2 hours! (but probably only for one session.)
