The election, that is. In case you didn't realize that. That's good news for those of you who tire of reading my political rants; soon it will all be over.
But, in this last week before "the most important election of our time," as it has been hyped, I will spend some time outlining a few reasons why I'm voting for McCain. In no particular order:
Economic policy
Noah decides to open a lemonade stand. He makes signs, gets cups, Countrytime mix, and ice. He sets up a table in the front yard. After the first hour he realizes that he's busy enough for another employee so he hires Molly. The two of them work hard, all day long, and have great success. They earn $20.
I tell Noah, "Great job! Now you need to give the government $12. They'll be giving some of it to your little sisters who were inside playing all day, some of it to the other kids down the street who also had a lemonade stand but who didn't have as much success since they live on a cul-de-sac and don't get any traffic, and some of it to another lemonade-stand-er who didn't make any money because he forgot to add sugar."
So Noah has $8 left. He spends $2 of it on tithing and $5 of it reimbursing me for the posterboard, cups, and Countrytime mix. Being left with only $1, he goes to Molly and tells her that she's been laid off. I inform Noah that if only he hadn't worked so hard, and had such success, he wouldn't have had to give the government so much of it, but since he did run a successful business, it was only fair for him to spread the wealth around. Noah decides that next time he won't work as hard; why would he want to when he'll only have to give more of it to the government?
This is Obama's plan.

I love reading your blog, but I must make a small comment on this entry.
First and foremost, I too will be voting for McCain for other reasons, and the economy is not one of them.
The information in this post is largely incorrect.I love people sharing political opinions, but let's make sure they are informed :) Under Obama's tax plan, Noah, and anyone making under $250,000 a year will see a tax CUT. (That's over 95% of Americans!)
Now if only McCain could adopt such a plan!
Thank you anonymous. But my story was an analogy; $250K is not realistic earnings for a lemonade stand so I was trying to illustrate that threshhold with $20 in lemonade earnings. The point remains; Obama's plan will provide less incentive for entrpreneurship and hard work in this country. And, most of the "95% who are getting a tax cut" are already not paying ANY taxes as it is, so that fact isn't quite right.
(I'm glad you're voting for McCain though!)
That's funny! I'm with you Sara...we need a little more capitolism and a little less Marxism!
Love the post.
I agree with you Sara and love your analogy! I enjoy reading your blog.
LOVE IT!!!
I sure wish that my relative that didn't know Obama is black...you know the one... I wish that SHE and her husband could read this! Fantastic post! You put it very well!
FABULOUS post, loved the analogy.
i liked leigh's point in a previous post about gov't mandates on charity. noah's a pretty good kid, he will probably share of his own accord. maybe not always, but he is definitely more likely to earn more and share more when someone is not telling him what to do. make sure he is not cutting in too much aspartame, giving counterfit bills, and then butt out as much as possible. reward initiative. recognize agency. seems ironic that i keep hearing obama talk about "fairness" yet his mantra is "yes we can". the american dream is alive and well (for now).
Very well done Sara.
Totally got your analogy.
Thank you for your "informed" and well written analogy. I hope Anonymous will share his/her "tax cut" with you. (Or what is left over after restocking his/her Kool Aid supply.)
And to think I wasted all those years in school learning economics. I guess I never realized it was is so simple. Over through the government and get rid of everyone who doesn't know how to make lemonade or have the good luck to have parents that have a house in the right place.
That's right Nick; I guess you were out sick the day they taught about lemonade stands and how to spell "overthrow."
:)
You say it sister! When we were in medical school we lived off of 13,000 a year. We had free food from food stamps, free housing, and when I had my baby it didn't cost a cent. Now when I have a baby under employed insurance I pay 3,000. What more can we give the poor people besides free everything?
