October catch-up

The kids have gone back to school now, after having been off for fall break last week. It really was such a pleasant week; the weather was nice and the kids & I had so much fun together, everyone got along, the TV was hardly ever on (except for watching the Wizard of Oz several times), and there were moments when I really lamented the thought of them having to go back to school. Homeschooling has been a bit of a topic around here lately since some of our neighbors, as well as some of my piano students, are homeschooled. Noah has requested it a couple times lately and when I ask him why, he says it's because he doesn't like eating lunch at school becuse "everyone is so noisy." Apparently the boy likes to eat in peace! It has NEVER been an idea I've considered (and I still don't), but the thought did enter my mind last week when I had such a nice time with all the kids at home. Their school-day is so long (Noah & Molly) and they have quite a bit of homework every day, and it seems that during regular school weeks there is hardly any time to just play and be carefree. Fortunately, they don't have homework on weekends and they have been doing pretty well lately with keeping their rooms & toys picked up so that they aren't overloaded with chores on Saturdays. Anyway, rambling aside, I am not going to homeschool them but I do wish they would get home an hour or two earlier from school every day. Maybe if I ran for a school board position I could get some changes implemented...

Here are some pictures from the past few weeks:

One last trip to the lake before the water got too chilly (end of September)
Calm, cool, kneeboarder Molly
Little crazies Noah and Zoe on the tubes (even Zoe loves the big waves!)
We kicked off fall break with our ward campout and it was a great time! Here's Lucy with friends Lucy B. and Natalie.
There was a great turn-out; the best in years... all the kids went around in packs like this and had such a fun time playing in the forest. It was a little bit windy and chilly but we all stayed warm enough. Lucy's the blonde with her back to the camera (thank you to Anjanell and Ale for these pictures; I didn't take any!)A few days later, trip to the zoo during fall break... we splurged and I let them have their most-likely one-and-only camel ride (at $5 per kid, I don't think we'll be doing it again but it was a "special occasion" this time!)

We got a great look at the "big cats"-- lions and cheetahs

Fall break also had lots of bike-riding and some trips to the park

Fall break activites not photographed include going to the dollar theater to see Wall-E, and the kids swimming in our 67-degree pool. The little crazies!

My kids are such great ages right now for having fun; nobody's a baby anymore and they are becoming increasingly self-sufficient, and yet they're all still young enough to be innocent and sweet, and to enjoy "little-kid" activities. I wish I could freeze them all RIGHT NOW and keep them these ages forever.

What a lovely post! I often think the same thoughts about not wanting my kids to grow up. I love the camel pictures!

I know what you mean. We had a great fall break too - Lindsay even said to me that it was such a great break, she never even once wanted a play date with friends. Lindsay is out of school by 2:40 but my nephew is out at 3:55 - depends on where you fall in the stop/start/bus schedule I guess.

Great post and great pics!

What is up with that GREEN lake water? Which lake was that? And how fun that you did the camel rides! My kids ask to do that every time we go to the zoo, but we don't. And I don't think I will tell them that their cousins got to do it or that will make it worse!!

Canyon Lake - it did look green in real life, but not THAT green. In real life it looked more like the 2nd & 3rd pictures. And it was, seriously, the one & only camel ride... I was justifying spending the money (on the whole zoo day: food there, buying regular tickets, camel, etc) because we weren't in San Diego :)

Nate is convinced that I'm going to homeschool the kids....I've got news for Nate! At this point in my life, I can't wait for real school to start. I taught joy school today and I don't think I want to do that everyday!

Great pictures, you guys do so many fun things...good for you!

The only justification I can find for homeschooling is that my kids wouldn't bring home every germ on earth all school year long.

Love your great pictures and happy thoughts.

Kids grow up WAY too fast for me. Today I finally pulled out the size 12 month clothes for my 7-month-old giant baby. I may or may not have shed a few tears...

We had a great fall break, too, just hanging around doing nothing. It was great! Definitely not camel ride great, but still great. I actually rode a camel once with Lori. I think we were 14 or 15, and we were in Salt Lake for some reason. Hmm... I don't remember much except the camel was ugly and smelly and really high. Your kids look like they were having much more fun than Lori and I did! ;)
