Updates

In an effort to produce more quality blogging, worthy of being printed in a blurb.com book someday, I apparently cannot ever think of ANYTHING to blog about these days. Nothing in the day-to-day seems worthy of its own post. But, since it's been a 6 days now since the last post I'll give a little update. There are 7 items of update so if you read one a day then I won't have to blog again for a week! We'll see. And the photo above is just for fun, from December.

ITEM #1

Overheard in the car yesterday:

Noah (9) and Tyson (cousin, 7) were discussing burritos....

Noah: I don't really like Taco Bell burritos.

Tyson: Not even the 5-layer burritos? Those are SO good.

Noah: No, I really only like my mom's burritos.

Tyson: (rolls eyes) Well that's boring.

Noah: Nuh-uh; my mom is a better cook than a chef!

Tyson: No she's not; how do you know that?

Noah: Because I've tasted chef food, and I've tasted my mom's food, and my mom's is WAY better.

(I wonder if he thinks the people who work at Taco Bell are "chefs" ??)

ITEM #2

It is raining here like crazy. Cave Creek schools are suggesting that parents keep their kids at home today so they won't have to drive through flooded washes. Some major roads in town are already closed due to flooding and the I-17 is closed near Camp Verde because of all the snow. I read this morning that some areas of Phoenix may get up to 5" of rain with this storm. Most areas of Phoenix only get 8-10 inches for the entire year. So, this is a lot rain for us. And, Aaron is positively DYING to go snowboarding in the fresh powder so he probably will this weekend.

ITEM #3

This correlates to items 1 and 2 (how my kids think I'm a great cook, and how it's chilly & rainy here). We have been eating a lot of soup lately. Tonight we're having leftovers from the potato soup I made on Tuesday, which my kids really like. But also lately a few times we've had this turkey soup, which for some reason my kids think is positively out of this world. I'm happy they like it because it's healthy and economical. A couple weeks ago when we had it for dinner one night my kids declared, "The only thing better than this soup is DISNEYLAND!!"

ITEM #4

Approximately one year ago I lost my camera battery's charger. Fortunately for me, it isn't unique and I have been able to get by with borrowing other people's chargers every couple of months, but I have still run out of battery power at a couple of critical times. It just occurred to me a few weeks ago that I could buy myself a new one. I found one on Ebay for $6.99! It arrived earlier this week and works like a charm. Hooray!

ITEM #5

My kids really want to help the people in Haiti. Sometime last year we put together some Humanitarian Aid hygiene kits, (click on that link for instructions how) and the kids just love knowing that some of them might have gone to Haiti. So next week we are going to make some more of them. I just love belonging to a Church that does so much in helping people around the world. Here's a quote from the Emergency Response section of the LDS Humanitarian Services Website: "When emergencies arise, Humanitarian Services responds quickly, providing medical and other needed supplies, depending upon the nature of the crisis and the climate and culture of the affected region. Each year we deliver more than 100,000 tons of food, blankets, medical supplies, hygiene kits, clothing, temporary shelter, and other materials to thousands of disaster-stricken people in many counties. Much of the material is donated; the rest purchased using cash donations." AWESOME.

ITEM #6

Yesterday I got to go out to lunch with a good friend of mine who I only see every few years. It was great catching up! She's such a talented gal and a good friend. It was lovely seeing you Ginny!

ITEM #7

I really feel like baking some cookies today. I bake something almost every Saturday night to bring to my ward choir for treats the next day, but there usually aren't many leftovers and sometimes my kids feel a little shafted. So today I'm going to bake up some chocolate chip cookies as a special surprise when they get home from school, served with a mug of hot chocolate ~ perfect for this rainy chilly day.

Well, that catches me up and now I'll probably go another week without a post, unless something really exciting happens around here. I guess "no news is good news" so you can assume we're all doing great! :)

What an awesome boy you have! I hope one day my kids will eat the food I make. Oh, and in your last post, I love the Hello Kitty fondant decorations you made. You are so talented. One of these days you need to come over and teach me some things!!

Amy - when Noah was Drew's age he wouldn't eat ANYTHING! Just in the past couple of years it's gotten much better... and the younger kids definitely follow the older kids' example when it comes to dinnertime pickiness.

I made brownies the other day and when I told Kevin he could have some he said, "you mean you didn't make them for anyone or anything?" Apparently I need to make more treats for no reason! :)

You are lucky your kids like your food. Mine sometimes do, maybe half and half. I know I should get offended, but I do when they don't like something that took me forever. Today we're having corn on the cob because Charlie wants to use those little corn forks that go in the ends. That should make everyone happy!

And how fun to go out with Ginny. I'm jealous :)

It was so fun to see you and to hang out with Zoe and Lucy, too! It's funny how with some friends several years can pass without seeing each other and yet you pick up as if you were just chatting yesterday. Hopefully it won't be another five years this time around...

I swear, my kids never really say anything hillarious like this. Yours are such a crack up!! And I would love to hear that my food is good. All I ever hear is "I don't want________ (fill in with anything I'm making for dinner)!" At least Nate likes my cooking.
