Trip Part Four: Sawtooths

Day 6:

Departed Yellowstone. I forgot to tell you before, but while in Yellowstone we started keeping track of all the different license plates we saw. Get this, we saw 44 out of the 50 states, plus 6 Canadian provinces! Pretty cool.

So anyway we drove from Yellowstone south through Jackson, and saw the Grand Tetons:
We headed west into Idaho and on the way, we saw a couple of these crossing the road:

We arrived around dinner time to the cute little town of Stanley, Idaho, population 100. We stayed by the Salmon River, where Aaron enjoyed a lot of good fishing time.

Day 7:

We hung out at Redfish Lake; how about those mountains in the background! Those are part of the Sawtooth Mountain range. Also that day we spent some time at the Sawtooth Fish Hatchery. There they had a "kids fishing pond," and Noah, Molly, and Zoe each caught a small rainbow trout. That night we stayed in a campground near Redfish Lake.

Day 8:

Noah caught the biggest fish of the trip on Salmon River, a bull trout. He was pretty excited!

That day we hiked for about 2 1/2 hours towards Marshall Lake; we didn't make it to the lake but we did have a lovely view.

And later that afternoon we drove to Stanley Lake, which was just gorgeous. Did we fish there? Why yes, of course! Actually I didn't do any fishing the whole trip beyond helping the kids cast, bait, or untangle their lines, but I was very content to read instead.

We stayed again that night near the Salmon River; our last night sleeping in the motorhome.

The next day we headed back to Utah; more on that tomorrow!

My mom always made us a map of all the US states and Canadian provinces and we would play the "license plate game" on vacation - we would color in each state as we saw it. National Parks were always great for finding them. I think only one year we got all of them. Hawaii & the small eastern states (Rhode Island and Vermont) were always the hardest!

I love how beautiful it is up in Utah & Idaho. I don't want to live there, but I can't wait to visit in October.

That's a fish! Did you work him into the dinner menu?

I'm thinking we should definitely look into a trip like this sometime. Looks like so much fun.

I'm liking these posts. That trip looked and sounds so fun! I saw Aaron and Noah with that fish on their plates- how was it?

The fish tasted pretty good; although we all liked the rainbow trout better (from a couple days earlier)
