What ever happened to "So how about this weather we're having?"

I was at Walgreens the other night picking up a few items. The teenaged boy who rang me up was pleasant and conversational. Now, I don't mind a little friendly conversation with a stranger from time to time, but tell me if you think this was odd:

Him: So how are you tonight?

Me: Great.

Him: Did you have to go to work today?

Me: Well actually I stay at home with my four kids.

Him: Ah, a stay-at-home-mom huh. Well, do you have a degree, or something you could fall back on if your husband ever left you?

Me: Umm, well, I teach piano lessons...

Him: You know, it's really important to have a degree so that if anything ever happened, you'd have a way to support your kids. I'm just saying. You know. It happened in this movie I saw.

Me: Uh, I do have a lot of family in town and I know they'd all be helpful and supportive if anything ever happened...

So is that weird or what?? For the record, I am not the least bit concerned about Hubs leaving me. But it was interesting to think about, what would I do? Hmm. Sell the house & buy something smaller? Sell my car & get something cheaper that wouldn't have a car payment? Probably take on a few more piano students? Hope my dad lets me do some more accounting department work from home? But that wouldn't be enough to pay the bills; I don't think I could avoid going out and getting at least a part-time job outside the home. Yowsa. I don't know how single moms do it! So my hat's off to you, single moms. And for you SAHM's like myself, what would YOU do to support yourself & your kids if you suddenly had to?

Click here for my thoughts & sentiments on last year's July 12th - it's a special day.

And Happy Birthday to my awesome Dad!

Yeah, that's totally strange. Next time just tell him it's none of his beeswax.

That is a weird thing for a kid to ask a stranger. I've thought the same thing- not "what if Jake left", but "what if he became handicap or died". I would have to get a job eventually. I do give props to single mothers- it would be hard.

Something similar happened to me the other day in the McD's drive thru. Only it was all about his 15 yr old drama. Crazy teenagers!

I'm not for sure what I would do, I would try my hardest to get a job from home, but probably have to get a real job and get a full time nanny from mexico (it's possible, they come live with you) Thats how I grew up in Peru with my 2 sisters, while my mom had like 3 jobs. not the ideal but single moms make it work, they are amazing.
For now, I just make sure Pete doesn't loose a finger or hand. I think I talked to the same kid, super chatty and it is weird that he asked those ?s.

That is an interesting conversation while checking out--could the kid be bored out of his mind?

If anything ever happened to Dan, I'd go back to work. Hopefully I could find someone here to hire me until I pass the Nevada bar, and that would take some serious studying. I guess it's good my in-laws are now retired so I'd have childcare covered for a while.

Funny you'd post this too, since we just finished watching "The Pursuit of Happyness." I couldn't imagine not having a family support system.

Yikes...what a whacko! I honestly think I'd be screwed! I have a degree, but what are you supposed to do with Human Development and Family Studies?
